About
Irnerius (c. late 11th–early 12th century) is regarded as the founder of the University of Bologna and a pivotal figure in reviving Roman law studies. He taught liberal arts and Roman law, becoming known as the 'Lucerna Iuris' (Light of Law) for his scientific approach to the Corpus Iuris Civilis. His mediation prevented imperial retaliation against Bologna after the 1115 destruction of Matilda of Canossa’s fortress, enabling the city’s formal establishment as a commune in 1116.
- Affiliations: Bologna schools of Roman law (precursors to the university)
- Key Events: Supported antipope Gregory VIII (1118), resulting in excommunication and exile
Irnerius’ legacy includes training seminal legal scholars (Bulgarus, Martinus, Ugo, and Jacopus) and shaping legal education methods. His death was mythologized in a 12th-century account mirroring Aristotle’s passing.
