Iris Mangeng is a Senior Scientist and Deputy Head of the Institute for Equality & Gender Studies at Mozarteum University. She holds degrees in art, linguistics, musicology, and pedagogy from institutions including Mozarteum University, Leopold Franzens University Innsbruck, and the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, where she completed a doctorate on gender representation in Alexander Zemlinsky's opera Der Zwerg.
Her research focuses on normativity-critical and intersectional perspectives in music studies, particularly gender representation in musical practice, the expansion of canonized repertoires, and the reception of female and BIPoC composers. She integrates the Third Mission framework to bridge artistic development with societal engagement. Mangeng combines academic work with freelance singing, music theater dramaturgy, and music education initiatives.
