Irene Vogel

Irene Vogel is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of Delaware (UD), where she currently serves as the MA director and previously acted as the BA advisor. She has held visiting professor roles at SUNY Buffalo and multiple institutions in Italy (Venice, Bergamo, Rome) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Nijmegen). Her academic journey began with a BA in Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, followed by an MA and PhD from Stanford University.

Her research focuses on phonology, its interfaces with syntax and phonetics, and language acquisition. Key areas include prosody, stress, focus, and the acoustic properties of prominence across languages. She co-developed the Prosodic Phonology theory with Marina Nespor and leads the Prosodic Typologies Lab, studying cross-linguistic prosodic patterns in languages like Arabic, Finnish, French, Mandarin, and many others.

Her advising and laboratory work emphasize student involvement at all levels, with projects spanning phonology, acquisition, and prosodic analysis. Future academic roles include transitioning to the PhD director position at UD.
