Irene Velasco Lopez is a Lecturer in Spanish at Durham University's School of Modern Languages and Cultures. She previously held teaching roles at the University of Nottingham Ningbo (China) as a Spanish Language Tutor and at the University of Bath as a Spanish Lector. Her career began with a Spanish Language Assistant position at the University of Cambridge.
Educated at Complutense University of Madrid, she holds a BA in Spanish Language and Literature and an MA in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language. Her MA dissertation analyzed interlingua errors in Madrid's linguistic landscape. She completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PGCLTHE) at Durham in 2021.
Her research interests span applied linguistics, language pedagogy, and multilingualism, informed by her teaching experience across diverse student populations in the UK and China. She is a recognized Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
