About
Professor Ionel Haiduc is a Full Professor at Babes-Bolyai University's Department of Chemistry and President of the Romanian Academy. His 50+ year career features groundbreaking work in inorganic and organometallic chemistry, particularly in supramolecular systems and metal-based therapeutics. He leads major interdisciplinary initiatives like the METALLOMICS project exploring anticancer metallodrugs.
His research spans:
- Design of coordination compounds for cancer chemotherapy
- Supramolecular assembly mechanisms of organometallics
- Inorganic ring systems and heterocyclic chemistry
- Biochemical mechanisms of metal-induced cytotoxicity
Honors include:
- Star of Romania Grand Cross (2007)
- Pushkin Medal (Russia, 2007)
- Doctor Honoris Causa from 2 universities
- Fulbright and Humboldt Fellowships
He coordinates teams developing novel metal complexes (Ga/Pt/Pd) that overcome tumor chemoresistance, with ongoing in vitro/vivo studies of pharmacokinetics and radiochemotherapy synergies.
