Previously, he served as an Assistant/Associate Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and held research roles at the National Hellenic Research Foundation. He holds a PhD in Biology from NKUA (1997) and a BSc in Biology from the same institution (1990).
His research focuses on cellular stress responses, proteostasis, and aging mechanisms, with notable contributions to understanding proteasome dysfunction, Nrf2 signaling, and anticancer drug mechanisms. Key areas include the role of herbal compounds in tumor cytotoxicity and the interplay between metabolic pathways and aging.
Dr. Trougakos has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles, achieving an h-index of 31 and over 10,000 citations. He has secured funding as Principal Investigator (PI) for EU projects like MediHealth, TASCMAR, and national grants such as PlantUp-GR.
