Ingu Hwang

Ingu Hwang is an Associate Professor of the Practice in Boston College's International Studies Program and a faculty member of the Asian Studies Program. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on modern Korean history, Cold War diplomacy in East Asia, and the history of human rights activism. Hwang’s landmark 2022 book, Transnational Democratization: Human Rights in South Korea and US Cold War Policy, examines how South Korean activists engaged global networks like Amnesty International to advance democracy amid US Cold War policies. He teaches courses on Korean division, human rights in East Asia, and Cold War legacies, including a summer immersion program in Seoul.

Notable awards include a 2020 grant from the Academy of Korean Studies supporting his book project. His work bridges local struggles for democratization with transnational human rights frameworks, highlighting the interplay between geopolitical dynamics and grassroots activism.
