Inge Arteel is a Professor and Head of the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). She holds additional roles including membership in FWO’s ENAG (European Neo-Avant-Garde) working group, co-chair of the THALIA alliance research group (VUB-Ugent), and co-editor of Germanistische Mitteilungen. Her academic leadership extends to chairing the Vlaamse Vereniging voor Algemene Literatuurwetenschap (VAL) and serving on the board of the Vlaams Talenplatform.
Her research focuses on neo-avant-garde poetics, intermediality in literature and performance, and contemporary German-language drama. Key authors include Friederike Mayröcker (generic hybridity, intermedial poetics) and Elfriede Jelinek (interventionist drama, cultural transfer). She also explores radio plays since the 1960s and contemporary theatre’s choric traditions.
Active in over 25 projects since 1999, her recent work includes Sounds of a Lifetime (radio media and life writing) and Sustainable yet forgotten (Belgian eco-art networks). She has supervised 21 theses, including doctoral work on Afro-German literature and radio drama.
In addition to 170+ publications, she contributes to academic governance through PhD committees, editorial roles, and international conferences. Her activities bridge theory and practice, exemplified by organizing workshops on audio drama and public listening events.
