About
Professor Ines Thiele is a leading researcher in systems biomedicine, currently serving as Professor for Systems Biomedicine at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUI Galway) and as a Principal Investigator at APC Microbiome Ireland, University College Cork. Her research focuses on computational modeling of human metabolism and microbiota interactions to understand the role of diet and genetics in health and disease.
Her research interests include:
- Constraint-based modeling of metabolic networks
- Integration of multi-omics data
- Modeling the human gut microbiome
- Applications in inherited and neurodegenerative diseases
- Diet-microbiota-host interactions
Her work leverages advanced computational frameworks such as the COBRA Toolbox and contributes to large-scale resources like the Virtual Metabolic Human database. She has received major recognition including an ERC Starter Grant and the EMBO Young Investigator award.
Her scientific awards include:
- ATTRACT Fellowship, Fonds National de la Recherche (Luxembourg)
- EMBO Young Investigator
- ERC Starter Grant (2017)
Ines Thiele earned her PhD in Bioinformatics from the University of California, San Diego, and previously held faculty positions at the University of Iceland and the University of Luxembourg. She leads the Molecular Systems Physiology Group, which develops comprehensive models of human cells and microbes to predict metabolic responses to genetic and environmental changes. Her work has significant implications for personalized nutrition and disease mechanisms.
She is affiliated with APC Microbiome Ireland, a major research centre at University College Cork, and collaborates extensively in microbiome and systems biology research. Her lab contributes to open science through public databases and modeling tools.
