Inderjit Kaur is an Associate Professor in the School of Music, Theatre, & Dance at the University of Michigan, with a joint appointment in the Department of Musicology. She holds dual PhDs in Ethnomusicology and Agricultural and Resource Economics from UC Berkeley. Her research focuses on Sikh musical worship, sensory ethnography, and the intersection of sound studies with South Asian cultural practices.
Dr. Kaur’s work bridges phenomenological analysis with sensory ethnography, exploring embodied experiences in Sikh liturgical music. She has published in journals such as Yearbook of Traditional Music and contributed to edited volumes like the Oxford Handbook of Phenomenological Ethnomusicology. Her forthcoming monograph with Oxford University Press examines Sikh musical genres through historical, analytical, and phenomenological lenses.
Her affiliations include the Center for South Asian Studies and the Center for World Performance Studies. Kaur has held leadership roles in the Society of Ethnomusicology, including co-chair of the South Asia Performing Arts Section (2020–2023). Her research has been supported by the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship.
In teaching, she offers courses on North Indian classical music, Bollywood song analysis, and graduate seminars on affect and sensory studies. She maintains active engagement with Sikh diasporic communities through public lectures and music competitions.
