Ina Sander

Dr. Ina Sander is a Research Fellow at Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, Germany, working within the Professorship for Transformation of Governance in Education and Society since August 2020. She is actively engaged in research and development projects focused on critical datafication literacy, digital education, and the societal implications of data-driven technologies.

Her educational background includes a PhD from Cardiff University's Data Justice Lab (2019-2023), where she completed her dissertation titled "Toward Critical Datafication Literacy: The Role of Online Resources in Fostering Critical Education about Datafication." She also holds an MA in Digital Media & Society from Cardiff University (2017-2018) and a BA in Media Science from Philipps University of Marburg (2013-2017).

Dr. Sander's research focuses on fostering critical awareness and literacy around digital technologies and datafication, with particular emphasis on critical datafication literacy, the transformation of society in the context of datafication, and the development of open educational resources. Her work bridges academic research with practical applications in educational settings, aiming to empower citizens and educators to navigate datafied societies critically and consciously.

Her publications and presentations demonstrate a consistent focus on developing frameworks for understanding and teaching about datafication, with recent work emphasizing practical implementation in educational contexts. She has developed numerous educational resources, particularly through the UNBLACK THE BOX initiative, which help educators critically evaluate digital tools and technologies used in educational settings.

Dr. Sander is actively involved in several significant projects, including UNBLACK THE BOX (since 2020), which helps educational institutions develop critical approaches to digital technologies, and ETH-TECH (since 2024), an Erasmus+ project focused on ethical technology usage in higher education. She regularly teaches seminars at Helmut Schmidt University on topics related to Big Data, datafication, and algorithmic decision systems.

As a member and coordinator of UNBLACK THE BOX and co-founder of the Critical Big Data and Algorithmic Literacy Network, she actively contributes to professional communities including the German Educational Research Association (Division for Media Education), the Society for Media Studies, and KriDiFoSch (Network for Critical Digital Research in School Context).
