Ina Berg is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Manchester’s Department of Archaeology. Her research focuses on the prehistoric Cyclades, cultural interaction in the Bronze Age Aegean, and ceramic analysis using scientific techniques like X-radiography and CT scans. She holds a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Cambridge (2000) and a MA in Classics from the same institution (1994), alongside studies at the University of Heidelberg (Classical Archaeology).
Research Interests:
- Cycladic Bronze Age societies and their interaction with Minoan Crete
- Ceramic technology, including forming techniques and experimental archaeology
- Island archaeology and seafaring in the Aegean
- Quantitative methods in archaeological analysis
Recent Projects:
- Analysis of Knossian pottery via X-radiography to study the socio-political role of the potter’s wheel
- Exploring Computed Tomography (CT) for understanding ceramic manufacturing processes
- Re-publication of Phylakopi excavations, focusing on conical cups
Teaching and Supervision: Dr. Berg coordinates courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, emphasizing employability and research-led education. She supervises PhD students in topics like island archaeology, ceramic studies, and quantitative analysis. Notable supervisees include Alison Millerman (The Spinning of Ur) and L. Houseman (Fluid Metaphors).
Membership & Activities: Member of the British School at Athens, the Royal Archaeological Institute, and the World Archaeological Congress. She co-organized the 2018 ‘Entangled Sea’ conference and contributed to the 2019 UK Archaeological Sciences Conference. Her book *The Cycladic and Aegean Islands in Prehistory* (2019) is a key publication in Aegean archaeology.
Labs/Teams: Active in the University of Manchester’s Archaeology Department, collaborating on interdisciplinary projects involving material science and digital archaeology.
