Ikem S. Okoye

Ikem S. Okoye is an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Delaware, with a joint appointment in the Department of Black American Studies and affiliation with the Islamic Studies Program. He directs the African Studies Program and serves on editorial boards for The Art Bulletin and Ijele. A professional architect trained at the Bartlett School (UCL), he bridges architectural practice and academia through work with the Delaware Design Institute.

His research examines West African art/architecture’s global connections, focusing on colonial/postcolonial dynamics, art’s role in slavery, and transnational diplomacy. Current projects explore 18th-century Niger Delta art/knowledge systems and modern African embassy architectures. His forthcoming book Hideous Architecture critiques colonial spatial legacies.

Okoye’s work interrogates how African art/culture navigate global power dynamics, from pre-colonial trade networks to modern diasporic cultural embassies. His transnational lens spans from Asante diplomacy in Ghana to contemporary African immigrant cultural centers in Chicago and Dubai.
