University of North Carolina at Chapel HillAbout
Igor Andreoni is an Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). He currently serves as co-Chair of the Rubin Transients and Variable Stars Scientific Collaboration, preparing for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's 2024 launch. His research focuses on electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational waves, multi-messenger astronomy, and high-energy transients like tidal disruption events and fast transients. He leads the Andreoni Transient Astronomy Lab (ATA Lab), leveraging telescopes such as the Dark Energy Camera and Zwicky Transient Facility.
Prior to his faculty role, he was a Neil Gehrels Prize Postdoctoral Fellow at the Joint Space-Science Institute/NASA Goddard (2021–2024) and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Caltech (2018–2021). His work involves collaborations like GROWTH and the Rubin Observatory, emphasizing time-domain astronomy and observational follow-up of astrophysical transients.
He actively participates in initiatives like the 'Deeper Wider Faster' program targeting fast astronomical bursts and gravitational wave events. His GitHub repositories reflect contributions to astronomy education and tools, including modules for image reduction, photometry, and gravitational wave localization.
