Ida Hadjivayanis is Senior Lecturer in Swahili (Education) and Departmental Director of Student Support and Experience at SOAS University of London's School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics. She holds a PhD from SOAS, MA from Middlesex University, and BA from National University of Lesotho.
Her research examines Swahili language variation, identity formation in diasporic communities, and translation practices across Indian Ocean networks. She investigates how contact between languages shapes Swahili varieties and speaker identities in transnational contexts. Current projects analyze the relationship between language, migration, and cultural preservation in Swahili-speaking communities.
