About
Iannis Talianidis is a Greek academic researcher and director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) since 2017. Previously, he served as Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Biomedical Sciences Research Center Alexander Fleming in Athens (2007-2016). His research spans gene regulation, epigenetics, liver development, and liver cancer, with significant contributions to understanding transcription factors and chromatin structure-function relationships.
Education:
- MD (1975-1981) from Semmelweis University Medical School, Budapest
- PhD in Biochemistry (1981-1985) from Semmelweis University Medical School
- Postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School (1985-1987) and University of California, Berkeley (1987-1989)
Research Focus combines molecular biology and epigenetics, particularly in liver development and cancer. His work explores transcriptional regulation mechanisms and chromatin dynamics, contributing to metabolic disease and cancer research.
Scientific Honours:
- ERC Advanced Investigator Award (2012)
- AXA Chair in Epigenetics (2017)
- Member of EMBO (2004)
- George Papanikolaou Prize (2010)
Professional Leadership: Served as reviewer for EU FP6/FP7, NSF, Wellcome Trust, and Cancer Research UK grants. Organized major international conferences including EMBO Workshops and FEBS-IUBMB Congresses, and chaired ERC panels.
