About
Distinguished Professor Ian Wright is a Professor in Plant Functional Ecology and Chief Scientist at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE), Western Sydney University. He holds an Honorary Professor position at Macquarie University and is a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre for Plant Success in Nature & Agriculture.
His research focuses on plant ecology and evolution, particularly global-scale analyses of plant traits, plant structure-function relationships, and microeconomic principles applied to plant strategies. Current work emphasizes adaptations to heat and water stress in Australian flora, including crop wild relatives.
Key achievements include identifying the Leaf Economic Spectrum and Least-Cost Theory, clarifying plant responses to environmental challenges. His work bridges micro-scale plant physiology with macro-scale ecological processes, leveraging optimality models and global trait databases.
- Grants & Partnerships: Multiple ARC grants (2022–2027) focus on drought resilience, functional trait databases (AusTraits), and plant success mechanisms.
- Awards: Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (2014–2021), NSW Premier’s Prize (2020), Australian Academy of Sciences Fellow (2019), Fenner Medal (2015).
- Leadership: Leads HIE’s research on plant adaptation and collaborates internationally on vegetation modeling and ecosystem dynamics.
His lab (Wright Lab) advances trait-based ecology, integrating field studies with theoretical frameworks to address climate change impacts on plant biodiversity and ecosystem function.
