Ian Stewart

Ian Stewart is an Associate Professor of Humanities at Dalhousie University, holding academic affiliations with King’s College and multiple interdisciplinary programs. He teaches in the History of Science and Technology Program, Foundation Year Program, and is adjunct faculty at Dalhousie’s Department of Classics, Marine Affairs Program, and College of Sustainability. His research focuses on epistemic boundaries in science, humanities, and social sciences, particularly in environmental policy and climate action.

Education:

• BSc (Honours) in Physics, Trent University
• MA in History and Philosophy of Science, University of Toronto
• PhD in History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge

Research Interests: Dr. Stewart explores the historical and sociological dimensions of scientific knowledge, including Renaissance natural philosophies, the role of universities, and contemporary environmental governance. He leads projects on climate adaptation (TranSECT) and offshore wind energy in Nova Scotia, funded by the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI).

Labs/Teams: He chairs the Research Advisory Committee for OFI’s Transforming Climate Action (TCA) project and collaborates on interdisciplinary initiatives bridging humanities, social sciences, and environmental science.
