Professor Ian Rumfitt is a Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, University of Oxford since 2016. His academic career includes professorships at the University of Birmingham (2013–2016), Birkbeck College, University of London (2005–2013), and fellowships/tutorships at University College, Oxford (1998–2005). He holds a DPhil and is a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA).
His research focuses on philosophy of language, philosophy of logic, metaphysics, and the history of analytic philosophy, particularly the works of Frege and Ramsey. He re-examines the relationship between truth and meaning, emphasizing connections between meaning, belief, and action.
Rumfitt's publications explore semantic paradoxes, mathematical discourse, and linguistic communication. His 2015 monograph The Boundary Stones of Thought establishes foundational principles for logic and meaning. Recent work (2014) redefines truth conditions within a meaning-first framework.
