Ian Hampson

Professor Ian Hampson is a Professor of Viral Oncology and Honorary Professor at the University of Manchester's Department of Cancer Sciences. He leads the Gynaecological Oncology laboratories at St Mary’s Hospital, established in 1997, which focuses on viral carcinogenesis mechanisms and translational oncology. His group investigates HPV, HTLV-1, and other tumor viruses, developing diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Notable achievements include discovering lopinavir's use for cervical dysplasia, leading to clinical trials in Kenya. He holds leadership roles in the Manchester Cancer Research Centre and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Education: PhD in Biochemistry (University of Manchester, 1982). Early work on angiogenesis (Science 1985) and molecular cloning techniques. Promoted to Reader (2013) and Chair (2017).

Research Interests: Viral oncogenesis, HPV/HTLV-1 pathogenesis, antiviral therapeutics, molecular biology techniques. Current projects include drug repurposing (e.g., lopinavir) and cervical cancer prevention in HIV+ populations. His lab employs molecular cloning, quantitative PCR, and yeast two-hybrid systems.
