Ian Carrillo

Ian Carrillo is a NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the Departments of Environmental Studies and Sociology. He is also associated with the Social Science Center for Development, Agriculture, and Society at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. In 2021, he will join the University of Oklahoma as an Assistant Professor of Sociology.

Education:

Research Interests:

Carrillo focuses on race, racism, and their intersections with environmental practices and policies in multi-racial societies like Brazil and the U.S. He employs qualitative, ethnographic, and comparative-historical methods to analyze how race shapes environmental policy formation, arguing that race is central to political economies of environmental change. His work bridges environmental sociology, economic sociology, and studies of inequality.
