Ian Abbs is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at King's College London, alongside serving as Chief Executive and Chief Medical Director of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust since July 2019 and January 2017, respectively. He holds a BSc in Immunology, MB BS in Medicine, and an MBA from the University of Cambridge. His career spans clinical practice in renal medicine and leadership roles in healthcare administration.
Research interests include healthcare systems optimization, digital health innovation, and genomic medicine, reflected in his leadership roles with the National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Network, London Genomics Medicine Consortium, and Digital Health.London. He chairs key organizations like the European Union Healthcare Alliance and previously led the Association of UK University Hospitals Medical Directors Board.
Awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London, his contributions bridge clinical practice, academic research, and large-scale healthcare innovation. He actively collaborates on international initiatives, such as the UK-India Health Partnership with King’s College London and P.D. Hinduja Hospital.
His advisory roles include membership in King's Business School Advisory Council, emphasizing strategic healthcare leadership and policy development.
