About
Iain Shepherd is an Associate Professor at Emory University's Department of Biology. His lab investigates the genetic basis of enteric nervous system development using zebrafish models to study Hirschsprung's disease and related neuropathies.
Education includes a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford (1994) and a B.Sc. from Imperial College London (1990).
Research themes include:
- Transcriptomic profiling of neural crest derivatives
- Functional validation of Hirschsprung-associated genes
- Mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodevelopmental disorders
- Evolutionary conservation of gut innervation mechanisms
Recent publications leverage single-cell genomics and live imaging to map enteric neuron diversity and identify novel disease pathways.
