About
Dr. Hyo-Jick Choi is a full professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. He leads the Sustainable Engineering and Drug Delivery Design (SEƎD) Laboratory, focusing on materials for health and environmental applications. His work bridges biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, and materials science.
- B.S. and M.S. in Ceramic Engineering (1999, 2001) from Yonsei University, Korea
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering (2007) from UCLA/University of Cincinnati
- Postdoctoral research at Georgia Institute of Technology (2009–2010)
- Research Assistant Professor at University of Cincinnati (prior to joining UAlberta)
Dr. Choi’s research addresses global challenges in health and environment through nano-scale systems. His lab develops:
- Low-cost, stable transdermal/oral vaccines
- Universal infection control measures (e.g., virus-deactivating filters in masks)
- Microfabricated drug delivery systems
- Colorimetric gas sensors for applications in CCUS, hydrogen monitoring, and food safety
He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses including MAT E 303: Principles of Nonmetallic-Inorganic Materials and MAT E 661: Structure and Characterization of Materials, covering topics like crystallography, material properties, and advanced fabrication techniques.
