Hui Shi is an Assistant Professor of Digital Language Studies at the University of Turku's School of Language and Translation Studies. She holds a PhD in Chinese Linguistics from the University of Oregon (USA), along with multiple advanced degrees in linguistics and East Asian Studies from Sogang University (South Korea) and Southeast University (China). Her research focuses on bridging theoretical linguistics and practical language pedagogy, emphasizing cognitive linguistics, digital media discourse, and gender studies.
Dr. Shi has extensive teaching experience across proficiency levels in Mandarin and Korean, covering language courses, linguistics content, and research methodology. She currently supervises PhD students and teaches advanced courses such as Classical Chinese, Business Communication, and Language Policies. Her tenure-track position began in 2024 following prior roles as a University Lecturer at UTU (2022–2024) and teaching positions at the University of Oregon.
Her research explores intersections between language and cognition, digital misinformation, and gender socialization in Chinese contexts. Notable works include studies on classifier innovation in digital culture, Nordic-style cultural portrayals on Chinese social media, and empirical analyses of gender socialization through educational and media channels.
