Dr. Hsien-Li TAN is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS), where she teaches ASEAN Law and Policy and Constitutional and Administrative Law. She concurrently serves as Co-Head of the ASEAN Law and Policy Programme at the Centre for International Law, NUS, and holds editorial roles with the Asian Journal of International Law and the ASEAN Integration Through Law Book Series (Cambridge University Press). Her research focuses on international law, international relations, and political economy, particularly examining ASEAN integration, human rights, and small states' roles in shaping the global legal order. She has authored/co-authored three books and published in leading journals including the European Journal of International Law and the Michigan Journal of International Law.
Dr. Tan’s work emphasizes policy impact, including co-directing the ASEAN Law and Policy Academy and engaging with ASEAN governments. She was awarded the Pingat Kepujian (Commendation Medal) in 2023 for contributions to ASEAN community-building. Her teaching spans tertiary and public officer students, and she has held fellowships at the European University Institute and NYU School of Law.
Her research trends reflect a focus on ASEAN’s evolving legal frameworks, responses to global challenges (e.g., pandemic governance), and the interplay between international law and geopolitical dynamics.
