Dr. Hsiao-Lan Hu is Professor of Religious Studies and Director of the Women's & Gender Studies Program at the University of Detroit Mercy. Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Religion from Temple University
- M.A. in Religion from Temple University
- B.A. in English and Philosophy from National Taiwan University
Her research examines Buddhist-feminist social ethics, socially engaged Buddhism, and intersectionality issues in religious contexts. She teaches courses on Asian religions, Buddhism, religious social ethics, and gender issues in religions.
Dr. Hu has published extensively on topics including Buddhist perspectives on sexual orientation, queer theory in Buddhism, and feminist interpretations of Buddhist doctrines. She serves as Vice President of Sākyadhitā, the International Association of Buddhist Women.
Her community engagement includes founding the Syracuse Veterans' Writing Group and the Nottingham Senior Living Community writing workshop, demonstrating her commitment to applied religious ethics.
