Hooman Kamel, M.D., M.S. serves as the Helen and Albert Moon Professor of Neurology, Chief of Neurocritical Care, and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine. He also directs the Clinical and Translational Neuroscience Unit (CTNU) at the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute. Dr. Kamel is a board-certified neurologist with subspecialty certification in neurocritical care by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties.
Dr. Kamel completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard College (2000), earned his M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (2005), and obtained an M.S. from Columbia University (2020). His clinical training included neurology residency and neurocritical care fellowship at UCSF before joining Weill Cornell Medicine in 2011.
His research focuses on stroke prevention, particularly investigating novel associations between cardiac arrhythmias and ischemic stroke. He leads an active research program through CTNU with studies in vascular neurology, stroke, and critical care. His work spans clinical and translational neuroscience, utilizing state-level administrative claims data, large-scale epidemiological studies, and biomarker studies. Dr. Kamel has published over 450 scientific papers in leading journals including NEJM, JAMA, Circulation, and Annals of Neurology.
His recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate continued focus on atrial cardiopathy, cryptogenic stroke, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, and stroke prevention strategies. The research shows strong emphasis on clinical trials (particularly ARCADIA and related studies), stroke etiology classification, and the intersection of cardiac conditions with cerebrovascular disease.

Dr. Kamel serves as Deputy Editor of JAMA Neurology and is on the editorial board of Stroke. His clinical expertise includes atrial fibrillation, critical care, and stroke management. He has extensive research collaborations with leading neuroscientists including Costantino Iadecola, Babak Navi, and Amy Kuceyeski.
