Professor Hongyin Tao is a faculty member in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1993) and has been recognized with visiting professorships at National Taiwan Normal University, University of Sydney, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Education
His research focuses on Chinese discourse and grammar, applied linguistics, language and culture, and digital humanities. He has contributed extensively to the study of Mandarin conversation, sociolinguistics, and corpus-based linguistic analysis. His work bridges theoretical and practical aspects of language education and cultural studies.
Notable publications include Units in Mandarin Conversation (1996), Dangdai shehui yuyanxue (1997), and special editions on Chinese heritage language (2006) and corpus linguistics (2004). He is currently co-editing a journal and book series on Chinese language and discourse.
