Hong Luo

Dr. Hong Luo is a Professor in the Department of Genetics and Biochemistry at Clemson University, affiliated with the College of Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and has extensive postdoctoral experience in plant genetics, biochemistry, and biotechnology.

His research focuses on genetic improvement of crop plants, particularly grasses and cereals, to enhance stress tolerance (biotic/abiotic) and agronomic performance. Key areas include non-coding RNA regulation, abiotic stress signaling pathways, and genetic engineering for crop improvement. Dr. Luo leads a research group with active projects in plant stress biology, molecular genetics, and bioenergy crops.

Dr. Luo has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, including high-impact studies on non-coding RNAs and stress responses. His work has led to patents for transgenic plant technologies, including methods to enhance stress tolerance and transgene containment systems. Notable honors include the 2024 SIVB Fellow and President Awards, and Clemson's 2013 Godley-Snell Agricultural Research Award.
