Hong Liu

Dr. Hong Liu serves as Principal Scientist II at A*STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) in Singapore and holds an adjunct appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He earned his Master of Engineering and PhD from NUS's Department of Mechanical Engineering and has been with A*STAR since 2001, transitioning to IMRE in 2003.

His group achieves extreme light manipulation through size, shape, and dimensionality engineering of optical resonators, enabling breakthroughs in neuromorphic photonics, quantum light sources, and flat optics. Key methodologies include top-down/bottom-up fabrication for high-Q photonic structures and wafer-scale nanoimprint lithography.

Analysis of his 2016-2024 publications reveals accelerating focus on bound states in the continuum for deep-UV generation, van der Waals heterostructures for neuromorphic chips, and wafer-level manufacturing of metasurfaces. His work bridges photonics, materials science, and quantum engineering, with Nature Communications and ACS Nano publications demonstrating 80%+ efficiency in ultraviolet metasurfaces and entropy-controlled super-resolution microscopy.
