About
Dr. Hobina Rajakaruna is a Principal Lecturer at De Montfort University (DMU), affiliated with the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Media and the School of Engineering and Sustainable Development. As Course Leader for the BSc Green Energy Technology programme and Engineering Year-0 Programme, he bridges academic leadership with sustainable technology research.
- Academic qualifications: BSc and PhD in Engineering disciplines
- Research group affiliation: Centre for Engineering Science and Advanced Systems (CESAS)
His research focuses on renewable energy systems, particularly solar crop dryer design and alternative fuel optimization. This includes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of two-phase reactive flows and droplet evaporation processes in combustion systems.
Publications highlight a deep engagement with thermal engineering and sustainable agricultural technologies, with recent work on mathematical modeling of solar dryers (2013), CFD ventilation optimization (2011), and diesel emission control strategies. His 2008 conference paper on enforced learning algorithms shows interdisciplinary breadth.
- Scientific recognition:
- Vice-chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award (2012, 2005)
- Research Informed Teaching Award (2007)
Dr. Rajakaruna teaches Engineering Applications, Mechanical Principles, and Thermal Plant & Sustainability, while supervising final year projects. His work integrates research into teaching practices.
As part of the CESAS research group, he advances sustainable energy solutions. Contact: hobina@dmu.ac.uk
