Hiroshi Oguri

Hiroshi Oguri is the Fred Kavli Professor of Theoretical Physics and Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and serves as the Director of the Walter Burke Institute for Theoretical Physics. He is also a University Professor at the University of Tokyo. His academic journey includes tenured positions at the University of Tokyo (1986–1989), Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1989–1994), and the University of California, Berkeley (1994–2000) before joining Caltech in 2000.

Ooguri's research focuses on quantum field theory, quantum gravity, and string theory, emphasizing mathematical structures to develop new theoretical tools for fundamental physics. Scientific Honors include the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon (Japan), Eisenbud Prize (AMS), Simons Investigator Award, Guggenheim Fellowship, Hamburg Prize, Humboldt Research Award, Louis Michel Chair (IHÉS), Frontiers of Science Award, and the Nishina Memorial Prize. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Mathematical Society.

As an educator, Ooguri teaches graduate courses like Physics 250a/b: String Theory at Caltech and has supervised a science movie recognized by the International Planetarium Society. He has authored eight popular science books in Japanese selling over 300,000 copies.
