Hilde Ervik

Hilde Ervik is an Associate Professor in Natural Sciences at the Department of Teacher Education, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). She is actively engaged in research related to sustainability education, environmental science, and teacher training, with a particular focus on marine plastic pollution and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

Her research interests center around innovative approaches to science education for sustainable development. Ervik investigates how socio-scientific issues (SSI), particularly marine plastic pollution, can be integrated into teacher education programs. She develops place-based instructional designs that connect theoretical knowledge with practical field experiences, often utilizing the Mausund archipelago as a living laboratory. Her work bridges traditional ecological knowledge with scientific research, especially regarding fishermen's experience-based knowledge of marine environments.

Ervik's publication portfolio reveals a strong emphasis on sustainability education across multiple levels. Her recent articles demonstrate a consistent focus on plastic pollution impacts, teacher training for environmental citizenship, and interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability. She leads and participates in multiple significant research initiatives including BærT (Sustainability Across), which develops interdisciplinary teaching programs across subjects; INUBU (Innovative Science Education for Sustainable Development), which creates new tools for ESD; ICSE Academy (2022-2025), a European collaboration strengthening STEM education; and ENSITE (2019-2022), an Erasmus+ project focused on environmental citizenship for future science teachers. Ervik frequently collaborates with master's students conducting research at the Mausund Field Station, integrating research and education in authentic environmental contexts.
