Hilda Rømer Christensen is an Associate Professor and Head of the Coordination for Gender Research at the Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen. Her work focuses on gender dynamics, welfare, mobility, transport, cultural analysis, and China-Denmark comparative studies. She leads major projects such as the Horizon 2020 TINNGO initiative on gender and smart mobilities in the EU and coordinates the Sino-Danish University Center’s welfare and innovation committee. Her research explores themes like gendered innovations in transport (e.g., Mobike in China), smart city experiments, and diversity in automotive branding.
Her academic activities include visiting scholar positions at Fudan University, Smith College, Cambridge University, and others. She has been appointed to EU advisory boards, including the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Advisory Board (2014–2017) and currently advises on gender integration in European transport policy. Her teaching covers gender and innovation, quantitative/digital methodologies, and comparative gender dynamics between China and Denmark.
Christensen’s recent publications analyze gendered mobilities in post-socialist China, smart biking innovations, and the cultural implications of automotive consumption. Her work bridges sociological theory with applied policy, emphasizing the interplay between global dynamics and micro-level societal changes. She received the KRAKA Prize Award in 2016 for her contributions to academic excellence.
Current projects include the 'Gender in Practice' educational initiative funded by Denmark’s Ministry of Higher Education and Science, focusing on gender, innovation, and digitalization. She collaborates internationally on grants involving Nordic and EU networks, promoting gender-aware transport planning and sustainable urban development.
