Herbert Edelsbrunner

Herbert Edelsbrunner is Professor of Mathematics at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (2009-present), having previously held positions at Duke University (1999-2012) and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1985-1999).

His research evolved from algorithms and data structures to computational geometry and topology, with applications determining research directions while emphasizing theoretical foundations. Current projects include alpha shape theory funded by the ERC and Austrian-Slovenian cooperation on algebraic footprints of geometric features.

He founded Raindrop Geomagic (1996-2013), acquired by 3D Systems, and has published foundational books including 'Computational Topology: An Introduction' (2010), 'Geometry and Topology for Mesh Generation' (2001), and 'Algorithms in Combinatorial Geometry' (1987).
