Henry Israeli is Teaching Professor of English at Drexel University where he directs the Drexel Writing Festival and Jewish Studies program. He holds MFAs in Poetry and Playwriting from University of Iowa.
Creative work includes poetry collections exploring trauma, immigration, and environmental themes, along with award-winning translations of Albanian poet Luljeta Lleshanaku. As founder of Saturnalia Books, he has published over 20 poetry collections.
Publications reflect consistent engagement with cultural memory and environmental consciousness. Recent works examine modern anxiety and spiritual dimensions of human-animal relationships.
Honors include:
- National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship
- Canada Council on the Arts Fellowship
- White Pine Press Poetry Prize (2019)
Teaches creative writing and literature courses with emphasis on environmental politics and animal studies in literary contexts. Poetry and translations appear in American Poetry Review, Tin House, Grand Street, and Best American Poetry 2025.
