Prof. Dr. Henning Lobin is the Director of the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS) and Professor of German Linguistics at the University of Mannheim. Previously, he held the chair of Applied Linguistics and Computational Linguistics at Justus Liebig University Giessen (1999–2018) and served as Vice President there (2002–2004). He founded and directed the Center for Media and Interactivity (ZMI) at Giessen. His leadership extends to the Leibniz Association, where he chairs Section A and sits on strategic committees.
Education:
Abitur at Gymnasium Ernestinum, Celle (1983); Studied German, philosophy, and computer science at Saarbrücken and Bonn; PhD (1991) and Habilitation (1996) in Linguistics.
Research Focus:
Lobin investigates the intersection of language, technology, and society, including digital writing, political discourse, corpus analysis, and scientific communication. His work addresses contemporary challenges like AI's impact on language and sociopolitical debates around gender-neutral German.
Supervision & Outreach:
He mentors BA, MA, and doctoral students and actively engages in public discourse via columns (ZDFheute, Spektrum), media interviews, and books such as Language Battle (2021) and Digital and Networked (2018).
