About
Prof. Dr. Helmut Koch is a Professor at Ruhr-University Bochum and a foundational figure in the PANDA Collaboration at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). Since the early days of PANDA, he has driven advancements in antiproton spectroscopy and hadron physics, notably leading the Crystal Barrel collaboration at LEAR (Low Energy Antiproton Ring) and pioneering research on deeply bound proton-antiproton states (baryonium). At Ruhr-University Bochum, he established the institute as a German spearhead for PANDA, including authoring the first Letter of Intent (LOI) that shaped the FAIR facility’s antiproton program.
- Key Contributions: Leadership in Crystal Barrel detector construction, active participation in PANDA committees, and practical input toward realizing the FAIR project.
Scientific Recognition:
- Awarded the PANDA Honorary Lifetime Membership in 2018 for outstanding service.
His work focuses on experimental hadron physics, particle identification, and detector development (e.g., Cherenkov systems). The PANDA collaboration highlighted his "smooth but clear management style" and enduring commitment to the project’s timely execution.
