Prof. Helmut Ehrenberg leads the Institute of Applied Materials – Energy Storage Systems (IAM-ESS) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He spearheads initiatives in sustainable battery research as spokesperson for the POLiS Cluster of Excellence and coordinator of the FestBatt and AQua competence clusters.
His research focuses on materials chemistry and sustainability assessment for next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems. Key projects include:
- Developing sodium-ion batteries to reduce reliance on critical metals.
- Optimizing recyclability and lifecycle performance of battery materials.
- Advancing industrial transfer through KIT's Battery Technology Center (BATEC).
Ehrenberg emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration across chemistry, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering to address challenges in material development, cell testing, and recycling.
