About
Prof. Helle Krogh Johansen is Professor of Infection Microbiology at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, Technical University of Denmark. Her research focuses on chronic bacterial infections, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa adaptations in cystic fibrosis airways. Using genomic and systems biology approaches, she investigates microbial evolution during long-term infection, including prophage dynamics, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and biofilm formation. She develops advanced infection models including 3D-printed tissue chips.
Her work reveals how pathogen diversification contributes to treatment failure and persistence. Current projects examine metabolic specialization during chronic infection and clinical applications of ultra-sensitive diagnostics for treatment monitoring.
