Professor Helen Steed is a consultant gastroenterologist at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and a Professor of Gastroenterology and Medical Education at the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Her research focuses on Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Microbiome, Nutrition, and Medical Education, with particular interest in biomarker development and family planning in IBD patients.

Her academic contributions include leadership roles as Secretary of the British Society of Gastroenterology (2021–2025) and Chair of the BSG Food and Function Research Group (2019–2022). She also serves as Director of Postgraduate Medical Education for the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, and as West Midlands Lead DME and Associate Dean for the Imaging and Endoscopy Academies.

- Gut microbiome alterations in postoperative Crohn's disease
- Quality of life in bile acid diarrhea patients
- Family planning and medication adherence in IBD
- Microbiome-liver disease interactions
Her research has been supported by grants from Guts UK, Crohn's and Colitis UK, and Bowel Disease Research Foundation. She supervises postgraduate research projects, including the Brains, Bowels and Babies study (2019–2022).
