Helen Appleton

Helen Appleton is a Departmental Lecturer in Old English at the University of Oxford’s Faculty of English, affiliated with Balliol College. Her research focuses on pre- and post-conquest English literature, saints’ relics, medieval environmental thought, and the reception of classical texts. She is completing a monograph exploring faith’s impact on medieval landscapes and co-edited Art and Mysticism: Interfaces in the Medieval and Modern Periods (Routledge, 2018).

Her interdisciplinary work bridges historical, theological, and art historical perspectives. Key projects include analyzing the British Library’s Cotton Tiberius B.v mappa mundi as a symbol of Wessex’s expansionism and examining King Alfred’s portrayal in twelfth- and thirteenth-century proverbs. She coordinates two major networks: The Early Medieval Britain and Ireland Network (fostering interdisciplinary collaboration) and The Oxford Psalms Network (exploring cross-cultural Psalm reception).

Her publications address topics such as architectural imagery in medieval lyrics, Classical poetry’s adaptation into Old English, and metaphorical language in saints’ lives. She has organized conferences like the 2016 Mystical Theology Network event on mystical articulation across medieval and modern works.
