About
Professor Heinrich Leonhardt serves as Chair of Human Biology & BioImaging at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich's Faculty of Biology, leading research on epigenetic regulation since his appointment in 2002. His laboratory investigates DNA methylation dynamics, chromatin states, and pluripotency mechanisms using advanced microscopy and biochemical approaches.
Research focuses on three pillars: epigenetic mechanisms in development and disease, pluripotency regulation in embryonic stem cells, and targeted cancer therapies through antibody-drug conjugates. The group operates the Center for Advanced Light Microscopy (CALM) and maintains strong industry ties through spin-off Tubulis GmbH, which has advanced cancer therapeutics to clinical trials.
Recent publications (2019-2023) demonstrate leadership in chromatin proteomics, nuclear architecture, and ADC development, with consistent output in high-impact journals. The lab's technical capabilities span 3D-SIM microscopy, proteomics, flow cytometry, and nanobody engineering.
- Innovation Prize of German Cell Biology Society (2008)
- Medal from Charles University Prague Medical Faculty (2011)
- m4 Award and Leibniz Gründerpreis for Tubulis Therapeutics (2017-2018)
The laboratory maintains active DFG funding through CRC 1243 (as Speaker) and CRC 1064 Project A17, with strong industry partnerships enabling clinical translation. Leonhardt previously served as Dean of Biology Faculty (2013-2017) and currently contributes to LMU's Center for Advanced Studies and Munich Center for Ethics.
