Heine Alexander Holmen is a Professor and Head of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at NTNU, Norway, and Head of IFR (Institute for Future Research). He holds a BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Oslo (UiO), with a scholarship from the Centre for the Study of Mind in Nature (2007–2012). He has been a visiting scholar at Birkbeck College, London (2008) and Rutgers University, New Jersey (2009–2010). Previously, he served as an Associate Professor at UiO (2011–2013) and UiT The Arctic University of Norway (2013–2021), and as Assistant Head of Department at IFF/UiT (2018–2021).
His research focuses on death and the philosophy of death, philosophy of life and meaning, value theory, ethics, metaethics, philosophy of action and mind, epistemology, and skepticism. Notable contributions include works on the philosophical analysis of mortality, the ethics of leadership, and the metaphysical foundations of knowledge. He leads research initiatives such as the Agency, Action, and Embodiment (AAE) group and contributes to feminist and decolonial philosophy through collaborative projects.
His publications span academic articles, book reviews, and editorial work for journals like Norsk Filosofisk Tidsskrift. Recent works explore ethical leadership, the philosophical implications of death, and the critique of epistemological skepticism. He actively engages with public discourse through media features and podcasts, addressing topics like existential meaning, ethical dilemmas, and the role of philosophy in contemporary society.
