Heike Karge

Heike Karge is a Professor at the Institute of History within the Faculty of Humanities at Karl-Franzens-University Graz. She leads the Department of Southeast European History and Anthropology and holds expertise in cultural and social history, with a focus on Southeastern and Eastern Europe. Her research spans interdisciplinary trauma studies, transitional justice, legal anthropology, and the history of psychiatry and medicine.

Her research explores intersections of war, violence, and memory, examining how societies navigate post-conflict legacies. She has led projects on refugee migration (MOJ DOM) and WWII remembrance, funded by the European Commission.

Her publications include monographs and edited volumes analyzing psychiatric history in Croatia and public health developments in Eastern Europe. She contributes to academic governance as a co-leader of the Graz branch of the Southeast European Society and as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Southeast Europe Society.
