Heidi L. Nees is an Assistant Professor and Mainstage Production Director in the Department of Theatre and Dance at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly). She holds a Ph.D. in Theatre from Bowling Green State University, an M.A. in Theatre from Illinois State University, and a B.S. in Acting from Ball State University.

Her research focuses on theatre historiography, politics of representation in Native American drama, and representations of the American frontier in performance. She has presented at conferences including ATHE, ASTR, and MATC, and co-chaired ASTR's Indigenous Performance Research in the Americas working group. Her publications appear in Theatre History Studies, Theatre Journal, and other journals.
Dr. Nees directs productions such as Spike Heels and The Crucible at Cal Poly, and has credits with SLO Little Theatre and Muncie Center for the Arts. She advises Students’ Stage and serves as a KCACTF Region VIII respondent.
