Heidi M. Altman

Heidi M. Altman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology at Georgia Southern University, where she has been affiliated since 2005. She is also an Affiliate in the Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program and accepts PhD students in her research areas.

• Education: Ph.D. in Linguistic Anthropology (University of California, Davis, 2002), M.A. in Anthropology (Florida State University, 1996), M.A. in English (Florida State University, 1990), B.A. in English (Florida State University, 1987).

Her research focuses on linguistic anthropology, cultural anthropology, and applied anthropology, with specialization in Native American languages, language revitalization, and the intersection of language and gender. She has contributed to indigenous midwifery programs, cultural competency training for healthcare boards, and community-based language preservation initiatives.

Recent publications emphasize rural maternal health disparities, Cherokee cultural practices, and the symbolic significance of deer in southeastern archaeology. She has secured grants for language revitalization projects with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and archival research at the American Philosophical Society Library.
