Heidi L. Sieverding is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SD Mines). She holds an A.A. from Worthington Community College and a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Geological Engineering and Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences from SD Mines. Her research focuses on systems thinking, life cycle analysis, environmental remediation, geohydrology, and geospatial analysis, with projects addressing sustainable bio-products, water conservation in agriculture, and PFAS mitigation. She teaches courses ranging from freshmen-level Geomatics to graduate-level Environmental Life Cycle Assessment and is developing a new graduate course on Designing for Multifunctionality (fall 2025). Dr. Sieverding advises SD Mines' Environmental Change and Sustainability Club and oversees the Sustainable Engineering minor program.

Her research emphasizes sustainability in agriculture and bio-product systems, including smart sensor development for water resource conservation and improving corn/ethanol production. She has over 20 peer-reviewed publications and prior professional experience in GIS database management for the U.S. Air Force, state government, and private firms. Dr. Sieverding balances academic roles with mentorship, including guiding her daughter (an SD Mines CEE alumna) and son (currently in Mining Engineering).
