Hedy Alavi

Hedy Alavi serves as a Teaching Professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University's Whiting School of Engineering. He concurrently holds the position of Associate Dean for International Programs at the Whiting School and chairs the Engineering for Professionals master's degree programs in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Science, and Environmental Planning and Management.

His academic credentials include a Bachelor's degree from Jundi Shapour University (1972), Master's and PhD in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University (1980, 1983), and an MBA in Management from Johns Hopkins University (2006).

Professor Alavi specializes in hazardous and solid waste engineering systems, with research spanning waste treatment technologies, regulatory compliance frameworks, and sustainable management practices. His work integrates engineering principles with environmental policy to address critical waste management challenges in urban and industrial contexts.

His distinguished awards include:

• 2005 Education and Public Service Award from the Universities Council on Water Resources
• 1998 Excellence in Teaching Award for Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals
• 1992 Merit Award from Maryland Department of the Environment

As chief examiner for the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists in Maryland and Washington D.C., and a registered Professional Engineer, he bridges academic leadership with regulatory practice. His program development initiatives have expanded graduate education pathways in environmental fields while strengthening industry-academia partnerships through the American Society for Engineering Education.
